dhcp client recommendations

Pallissard, Matthew-2
Hello,

We're currently setting up ISC dhcpd/ddns for use in our data center.  Everything server side functions exactly as expected.  Client side is where we have questions, so forgive me if this is the wrong place to ask.  In the case of a dhcp server failure, we were hoping to have clients (CentOS 6/7, Ubuntu 14/16/18.04) retry indefinitely.

We've done some research into dhclient and NetworkManager but have yet to find a straightforward answer in the man pages/google searches.  This leads me to two questions.

1. Does anyone know how to accomplish this or have other recommendations?
2. The lack of straightforward answers has me wondering; should I be rethinking my problem or approaching it from a different angle?

Thanks in advance.

Matt Pallissard

Hi Matt,

What sort of lease time are you thinking about giving your clients?
With indefinite retries, are you trying to solve the problem of:

* Clients receiving IPs at boot time before services have started
* Clients renewing their leases post-boot with services running?

Very long lease times.  The exact length is still TBD, but probably as long as we can sanely extend them.

We're looking at the latter.   We're trying to have clients keep attempting to obtain addresses indefinitely in the [unlikely] event that the dhcp server becomes unreachable.

If the context is critical infrastructure I would suggest setting up a failover DHCP and making this a non-issue.

It is, and we are.  The overall goal is to have things recover if there were some sort of catastrophic failure.
