DRP server startup

Friesen, Don MTIC:EX

We run a failover configuration.  We have a second set of servers at a DRP site.  All our relays have all four addresses configured.  The DRP servers are configured to not start the daemon on reboot.  Or at least they should have been.  The server that was secondary at the DRP site was not properly configured.  On a reboot the daemon started.  To my surprise, it served nothing.

I checked the configuration and it is configured to serve.  It has a copy of the lease data from the production pair.  The startup log follows.

Is the reason it served nothing that it is the declared secondary server in the failover and the primary was never started?

RE: DRP server startup

Friesen, Don MTIC:EX

No.  The log shows it receiving nothing.  The prod servers log a lot of inbound traffic, and any offers they make.  This server logged nothing at all.  Which I find odd.

Note that the DRP won't see renew packets, because those are usually unicast to one DHCP server.  They will only see broadcast packets.  If there are no 'new' clients, there might not be any.  If a new client (or release/renew, depending on the client) does not show up, then I would suggest tracing packets to be sure that discover packets are reaching the DRP servers.

I have snooped the interface, and see traffic arriving.

I think this Saturday I may do a DRP test of the Primary.  I was wondering if this was a feature of a Secondary server in a pair, that it would do nothing until it has at least established a first connection to the Primary.

Just a clarification... which interface are you inspecting? vnet0, vnet1, vnet2, vnet3?
And what is the destination address of the traffic that you see? Is it unicast or broadcast?

RE: DRP server startup

Friesen, Don MTIC:EX

Snooping vnet0 I see relayed traffic that the relay has forwarded to the server.  We do not run local traffic, so the servers will never directly see broadcasts.  Since this server is not production and has never served out any addresses, the remote clients will not be unicasting to it.  The relays will convert all broadcast to unicast and forward to the server list.  Since it retains the full list of 105000+ leases, the configuration for those networks is understood, otherwise it would flush the lease database.

I don’t think I’ll know more until I get a chance to turn up both DRP servers as a paired set and watch them converge.

Are you seeing this server's address in the address list?
Are you sure that the requests are coming in the only active interface (vnet0), and not in one of the others (vnet1-3)?

I believe that even when a secondary DHCP server comes up without it's primary peer, it should work immediatelly, as long as the working prerequisites are met (configure interfaces, configured subnets, configured pools).

Experimentation Saturday, and I’ll see.  This is what I thought too.

And what about the address of the relay server (IGWADDR), does it correspond to one of the configured subnets from this server? Even if it doesn´t have an active pool?

Also yes.  It all checks out.  Thanks for the replies.
